In 1994 when my wife Andie and I contracted Martin Smith and Hawkeye Builders to construct our home, it was the best contractor choice we could have made. Martin was a pleasure to work with because he is sincere, conscientious, understands complex building designs, is a problem solver, has excellent product knowledge, and is hands on with his staff by being at the job. After the house was completed, Martin was always available for the next 18 years to consult with us about any maintenance problems, and if necessary, get the problem fixed in a timely and efficient manner. When we added on a significant addition and built a barn, there was no choice but to use Martin Smith and Hawkeye Builders. Tami and I wish to express our appreciation and thanks for your diligence and care in building our house. Since we would be absent during the construction of the house, choosing a builder that we had absolute confidence in was a key element to a successful project. Our decision to employ Hawkeye Builders was a measured decision based on interviews with you and examining your completed homes. Further, your comment about ‘wearing a tool belt’ and actively managing the project from the ground up gave us assurance that Martin Smith was the guy that we wanted to build our home.
At the conclusion of the build, we found all your work and subcontractor work to be exceptional. Each phase of the work from excavation, concrete, framing, cabinetry, insulation, electrical, plumbing and painting was done by superior workmen and suppliers, and your trim crew did beautiful work; we marveled at the workmanship and the beauty of the final woodwork. We liked how you stayed on budget and accounted for all costs in a professional and businesslike manner.
Your advice on all phases of the building was much appreciated and valued. I remember the day you asked me to stop by while I was in Durango to review your recommendation to redesign the upper patio support. You wanted to eliminate the center support to enhance our view of the La Platas Mountains, and we are reminded of that brilliant decision every time we sit on the balcony. On another occasion, I remember you tore out and rebuilt some ducking in the storage room to ensure that the door opened and closed properly and as designed. It was a small detail in a room that nobody would really see, but I was impressed that you wanted to have the door work correctly. There were other countless ideas you had from the trap door to access the electronic gear, the roof rings to support snow clearance, the design work on the gables, the inlayed wood on the coffered ceiling, eliminating windows in front of the elevator and in the study; all your advice was appreciated and enhanced the beauty and functionality of our home.
Lastly, please feel free to use pictures and likenesses of our home to promote your workmanship and design, and we would be happy to open our house to your clients seeking confirmation and validation of your contracting skills and craftsmanship.
